. . . for potential
new members for the Fairfax Club. The upcoming November meeting
offers a chance for all of us to bring in friends, colleagues,
acquaintances, etc. who are qualified for membership and might
enjoy the service and fellowship that our club offers.
Our
semi-annual membership mixer, with a particular emphasis on
fellowship with an election night theme, will offer all of us a
chance to get to know potential new “candidates” for the Zonta
Club of Fairfax.
Our Special
Guest Speaker that evening will be Elaine Ryan, Deputy Executive
Director of Government Affairs, American Public Human Services
Association, who will address us on “ Women’s Issues on Capitol
Hill”.
If you haven’t
already invited at least one guest, please give it some serious
thought.
Consider that
vivacious woman you just met the other day at that professional
meeting or a new acquaintance at the office.
How about
that small store that you may have bought a trinket from during
some early Christmas shopping—is the owner or store manager a
woman?
I know if you
ponder for a moment you can think of at least one person to invite
to the mixer. Wouldn’t it be delightful to have a room full of
potential new members at this meeting?
Please call the
information line by Friday, October 31st at
703-866-7167 or email
barbara.lippa@fairfaxcounty.org.
by the same date so we will have a sufficient information packets
available for our guests.
So bring yourself and a friend to the meeting and
don’t forget to VOTE!

In response to the Club’s
decision at the summer retreat to focus all of our service activities this year
on domestic violence, the Service subcommittee met to come up with an action
plan. It was decided that we would focus
our efforts in three areas: assisting the
Fairfax County Women’s Shelter, adopting an associated transitional home in need
of hands-on service, and identifying current local and national women’s issues
for which we can be advocates.
The initiative will be kicked-off at the November
Membership Mixer, at which we hope to have representatives from the Shelter and
Bethany House, the transitional house we have offered to support.
You won’t want to miss this meeting, not only for the fun and fellowship
of meeting potential new members, but also to participate in launching this new
effort. We hope it will stimulate new
members to want to join us!
Please bring an umbrella (or 2) to the Membership
Mixer to donate to the women and children of the Shelter.
Each month we’ll focus on a different item or hands-on project for the
Shelter or Bethany House.
Join us on November 4th for more details and don’t
forget your umbrella

We have all been very busy this past month. The Art Auction committee
has been working very hard on last minute details for the event on
November 1st. I hope you all are selling lots of
tickets!! The membership committee has worked up a wonderful program
for this month’s business meeting and the service committee is moving
full steam ahead on its plans to support the Women’s shelter and the
transitional home. And somewhere in there a bunch of us found the time
to hit Virginia Beach and attend the District 3 Conference. I
personally found the conference very inspiring and great fun to be
around all those great women. It filled me with the energy and desire
to move our programs along and do some good work. So bring a friend
to the Membership Mixer and the Art Auction. I’ll see you there.

Zonta International Convention 2004

What’s New??!!
·
The New York City Dine Around
To
allow Convention goers the opportunity to visit a variety of New York
City neighborhood restaurants and meet other Zontians from all over
the world, we will offer the NYC Dine Around experience. During five
evenings, Zontians can partake of an escorted group dinners in a
traditional American, Soul Food, Italian, Chinese, or Brazilian
restaurant. Pick the cuisine that appeals to you or take advantage of
several different neighborhood restaurants over the course of the
week. Transportation to and from each restaurant will be provided.
·
The Marketplace
Zonta shoppers will have the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of
Zonta related items, sold by the Zonta Clubs of North America, in our
extensive Marketplace. Only clubs, not individuals, will be allowed
to sell products. Up to 250 tables of Zonta items will be displayed
for your browsing enjoyment. The profits of these sale items, which
will be used to support club activities and projects, can be used as
speaker gifts, souvenirs, and presents for Zontians back home
·
Open House
We
are working to offer Open House hospitality from members of Zonta
Clubs and Districts all along the east coast of the United States.
Opportunities for Open House visits will be available from June
26th to July 2nd, before the Convention; and
from July 9th to July 15th after the
Convention. Home stay and breakfast are included in the Open House
program, and visitors are expected to pay transportation costs.

The Silver Diner
Revisited!
Last spring we had an extraordinarily successful fundraiser at the
Silver Diner at Tysons. We were able to raise almost $500 for our
Domestic Violence initiatives. We are going to have the same
opportunity this December. We hope to be able to raise at least that
amount, maybe even more working at the Silver Diner again.
Mark your calendars and get your aprons ready for
Wednesday, December 10th for another exciting time. We will
hostess, wait tables, and deliver orders to all of the Silver Diner’s
customers and all of our friends and family members whom we’ll invite
to support our project.
We will have sign up forms at the Membership Mixer on
November 4th and at our holiday meeting in December for you to be a
hostess, waitress or order deliverer. Be thinking about how you want
to help on December 10th and get ready to put your name on
the dotted line!
Plan to invite all your friends and family and get ready
to serve with a smile on your face!

District 3 Conference Highlights
|
|
Eleven members of our club traveled down to Virginia Beach
to attend the District 3 conference on November 3rd
thru 5th. The area and hotel were in very good
shape considering that Hurricane Isabel had just been 10
days prior. The beach itself looked great and I know one
member of the group actually went swimming in the ocean!!
The Friday dinner was optional and most of us went out
around town to sample the wonderful food. After that it
was down to business. Here are the highlights:
·
Meyera Oberndorf, the Mayor of Virginia inspired us with
her wit and wisdom as she welcomed us to the beach. A 7
year survivor of breast cancer, she also led our Rave Walk
on Saturday which raised $3,500 for a local mammography
center and safe house for domestic violence victims.
·
The Area President Reports were presented “group” style
instead of individually which made it much more
entertaining. There was a bit of singing and laughter and
great appreciation from the crowd!
·
Candidates for office presented their speeches, and the
following people were elected for the 2004-2006 biennium:
Governor: Sue Halsey, Lt. Governor: Jo
Manson (YEA!!), Treasurer: Karen Shirey, Area 1
Director: Jackie Shapiro, Area 2 Director: May Ann
Tarantula, Area 3 Director: Barbara Taylor, Area 4
Director: Lisa Fraser ,
·
Tebbie Cleft and Judy Johnston enticed us to come to the
Z.I. Convention in New York City in July, 2004. |
·
A number of awards were presented to clubs for their
achievements this biennium: Long-Range Planning:
Hackensack; Long-Range Planning: Hackensack-Ridgewood;
P.R. /Communication: Teaneck-Bergenfield; Z Clubs:
Alexandria; Status of Women: Teaneck-Bergenfield and
Greater Somerset, Service: Teaneck-Bergenfield; United
Nations: Trenton; Lt. Governor’s Award: Charles County;
Governor’s Award: Teaneck-Bergenfield.
·
Lt. Gov. Sue Halsey’s proposal to establish a
transitional membership status in the Zonta International
By-laws was approved. It will now go the New York
Convention for further consideration.
·
Jane Garvey was honored with a raffle in her name to
benefit the Zonta International Foundation. $2,600 was
raised for the Foundation in Jane’s honor.
·
Z.I. President, Margit Webjorn, spoke to us through a
videotape. She talked about the biennium goals and
encouraged all of us to support the Zonta International
service projects.
·
On Saturday night, we enjoyed a “beach banquet”, complete
with a calypso band, limbo, and a number of naval aviators
who crashed the party and helped us dance the night away!!
·
The Annual Memorial Service to honor deceased Zontians
was held on Sunday morning with a backdrop of the ocean.
Our own Fay Gillis Wells was one of those honored.
