Mark Your Calendars
Now
for the
Nov 1
Art Auction
|
November 1st is a
significant date for the Zonta Club of Fairfax County because it marks
the date of a very important fund raiser - our 15TH ANNUAL ART AUCTION!!
Come one, come all and invite everybody you know (and their friends as
well) to join us for the festivities.
The auction, hosted by Avatar Galleries, will begin with the preview at
6:00 pm and the auction at 7:30 pm. Admission will be $10 per
ticket or 2 for $15. We will also be offering Patron Packages with
4 tickets for $25 (Silver), 10 for $50 (Gold), and 20 for $100
(Platinum).
If you think there's a lot of time
between now and then, think again - there are always things to do to
support our auction! Start by telling everyone you know to mark
their calendars...Fall is a very busy season (and right before the
Holidays, which we want to take advantage of). Also, start
thinking about businesses you can sell ads to so that we can include
them in our program.
Remember, all ads and ticket sales are strictly profits for Zonta!
Finally, because our basket raffle was such a huge success last year, we
will be doing it again - get those creative juices going and think about
a theme for your basket.
If you missed
the Summer Retreat and didn't get your tickets or weren't able to sign
up for an art auction job, don't worry, we will find you!
Stay tuned for more updates on art auction activities!

As I write this column,
I’ve just returned from the annual retreat. It was a thoughtful and
productive meeting. And we have turned some of our activities upside
down!! But change is good and an effective tool to keep us fresh and
inspired. I do want to thank a few people who were instrumental in the
success of the retreat. First, thanks to Elaine Cudney and Heather
Fererri-Jones for providing a wonderful place in which to “retreat.” Bobbee
Cardillo took charge of the breakfast and lunch and did a great job. The
talented Barb Pavon made beautiful Zonta tote bags for all of us and Anita
Light helped me with the content of the retreat. I am truly blessed to be
able to work with such wonderful people and I do thank you all. We have
lots of new things going on this fall so read your newsletter carefully!
Enjoy the last days of summer and I will see you in September. And don’t
forget – we’re meeting a week later in September!

Victims of Crime Act (VOCA)
Funding
Sen. Mike
Crapo (R-Idaho) has written a letter to the Congressional appropriation
chairs asking that the VOCA Cap be raised to $675 million. It is capped now
at about $610 million.
Unless the
cap is raised, Domestic Violence Programs (DVPs) will see an additional
reduction of at least 8% next year. We already suffered a 7% loss this
fiscal year which resulted in cutting the DVP’s volunteer coordinator from
full-time to part-time and a $7,000 decrease in funding for the Children's
Program and Hispanic Outreach program.
It is
CRITICALLY IMPORTANT to get Republican Senators to sign on. And our very
own Senator Allen has not yet done so. We need his signature. Please call
his office 202-224-4024 or send a letter by fax 202-224-5432.
Explain that
VOCA funding is critical to our local DVP (24/7 crisis intervention,
counseling and shelter services to victims of DV and their children, without
adequate funding, we won't have a trained, well-informed volunteer corps to
provide services, who gave over 13,000 hours of direct service in FY 2003;
grant funding also pays for our Hispanic Outreach Worker and Children's
Social Worker).VOCA funding is provided by white-collar crime fines, and
therefore should not impact the budget if the cap is raised. The funds are
already there.
Please,
please make the call now! Thanks so much for your support of the DVP.

The notion that we could raise $35 million by buying
a
book of stamps is powerful! As you may
be aware,
the US Postal Service recently released its new "Fund the Cure"
stamp to help fund breast cancer research. The stamp was
designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland.
It is important that we take a stand
against this disease that affects so many of our mothers, sisters
and friends. Instead of the normal 37 cents for a stamp, this one
costs 40 cents. The additional 3 cents will go to breast cancer
research. A "normal" book costs $7.40. This one is only $8.00. It
takes a few minutes in line at the Post Office and means so much.
If all stamps are sold, it will raise an additional $35,000,000 for
this vital research. Just as important as the money is our
support. What a statement it would make if the stamp outsold the
lottery this week
Please do two
things TODAY:
1. Go out and purchase
some of these stamps.
2. E-mail your friends
to do the same.
Many of us know women and their families whose lives are turned
upside-down by breast cancer. It takes so little to do so much in
this drive. We can all afford the $0.60.

July 26, 2003, Retreat
“Good Deeds
vs. Making a Difference”
Our
president, Connie Brock, reminded the group of our March meeting where
Sue Christie challenged Fairfax Zontians to examine our activities and
decide where we were doing good deeds or making a difference.
The 14 Zontians
in attendance developed a chart to define the difference between a good
deed and an activity likely to make a difference. We agreed that good
deeds were short term, had limited impact, results were hard to measure,
but made the doer feel good.
In contrast,
activities making a difference were: longer term, affected more
people, addressed root causes, had quantifiable, measurable results, and
made the recipient feel good vice the doer.
After the
group agreed on the differences between the two types of actions, we
divided into two groups and reviewed the club’s activities for the past
year - categorizing them as good deeds or making a difference.
The group was
challenged to look at our activities from a more general focus – rather
than assuming we wanted to continue fine-tuning the past year’s
activities.
As a result,
and in view of limited resources, the group agreed that our activities
would concentrate on two major areas: (1) providing scholarships to
NVCC and GMU and (2) supporting the Fairfax County Women’s Shelter.
