Zonta Scholarship Recipients

The Scholarship Committee selected five women from numerous candidates to be recipients of the scholarships that are offered by our club.

Two full scholarships and one partial scholarship were awarded for the Edith Clark Nalls Scholarship at George Mason University and two scholarships were awarded for the Barbara J. Lippa Scholarship at Northern Virginia Community College.  These deserving students will be our guests at the October meeting to share with us their educational goals.  Please join us!

Roberta Smith.   Roberta is a divorced mother of three children who is pursuing a Master's Degree in social work. She is returning to school after a long absence during which she raised a family and taught children at the elementary level.  Her goal is to apply her education in a manner that will help people improve their condition and cope with their problems.  She is a "strong woman who holds fast to her dreams."

Heather Hagle.  Heather is a recent graduate of Western Washington University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.  She graduated with a 3.5 GPA and will be a first year graduate student pursing a master's degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology.  Her career goals are to contribute to a healthier, more productive workplace environment, and to positively influence employees and support businesses by managing productivity levels.

Katherine Morse .  Katherine graduated from Arizona State University in 2001 with a major in Psychology and a minor in Family Studies.  She is pursuing a Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology.  Her professional goal is to make a significant contribution to the study of human performance in an academic capacity through research and in an applied capacity through business consulting.  Katherine wishes to research work and family balance issues and stress in the workplace.  These issues are particularly challenging for women in the workplace.

                                         PRESIDENT'S CORNER

The October meeting is one of my personal favorites.  That when we get to meet the scholarship winners and their families.  I'm part of the scholarship committee so I had a chance to read and listen to their stories during the interview process.  It is such a great feeling to be able to help these women who are trying to get ahead in what are sometimes very difficult circumstances.

We work hard all year in our fund raising efforts to send these women to school.  The Art Auction committee is in full swing and I know everyone is working hard to get advertisements and to sell tickets.  So be sure that you come and see the ladies that you are working for.  They will appreciate it and you'll feel good too.  - - - Connie

                                    Zonta International Convention  2004

                 What's New?

               Electronic Audience voting!
Instead of a lengthy, frustrating count of delegate votes for various issues, we will replace the green and red voting cards with electronic hand-held audience voting devices.  The electronic voting devices will be preloaded to reflect the number of votes each delegate holds, and allow for instantaneous counting.

   On-line Registration!

For the first time, Zontians will have the opportunity to register for the Convention online.  This process will eliminate the lengthy process of mailing registration materials, allow the use of credit cards, and provide rapid feedback to each registrant

              Volunteer of the Year Award

On August 6, 13 members of the Club attended the InterService Club Council of Fairfax’s annual recognition and celebration of Volunteer of the Year.  Bobbee Cardillo’s husband and son accompanied her and cheered her on at the event.    We had a wonderful dinner at the Il Lupo Restaurant before the ceremony.
Many thanks to Simin Redjali for being the Club representative on the InterService Club Council and organizing the event.  And again congratulations to Bobbee.  - - -  Connie

Hi Connie,
It really looks great and very informative. Really, it’s very very nice! Hats off to Judy and you.
My only suggestion is that Judy may want to put in Bobbie's number or a # to call for the dinner reservations rather than have a member (especially me) try to look it up.
I will not be there for any of the fall meetings and I doubt that I will make the art auction. We are sending an 1/2 page ad, and of course I'll take some kind of ticket package.
I can vividly remember when you brought Leslie to our first meeting! What a terrific night. Now mama, it’s off to school and a whole new life for you begins. Congratulations!  You're right, the time just flies by so enjoy every moment you can. Love you, Rosie

            Sizzling Art, Cool Jazz,

           and… Hot Chili!

This year’s Art Auction food is going to have a different twist.  As the Beatles would say, we will be “getting by with a little help from our friends” – friends in the Fairfax Firefighters and Paramedics Union and outstanding educational leaders in our community!

A tasty Chili Cook-off provided by our local Firefighters Union will kicked off this year’s auction.   They will provide 12 delicious samplings of each “secret recipe” chili.  Our august panel of judges will conduct an in-depth analysis of these tasty creations.  Competition will be tough so to sooth the souls we will be serving up some cool jazz to make the event even more fun.  Along with chili we will have our usual assortment of other tasty foods, the wine and soda bar, and of course our world famous desert buffet with coffee at the break.

To add to the fun and festivities for the evening, a “Fairfax-Famous” panel of judges has agreed to support our event.  Joining us for the evening will be Dr. Domenech, Superintendent of Fairfax County Schools; Dr. Allen Merten, President, George Mason University; Dr. Robert Templin, President, Northern Virginia Community College; and Nizam Ali, Manager, Ben’s Chili Bowl Restaurant, Washington, DC.   One more judge will potentially be joining us, too, so stay tuned for late breaking news!

We look forward to seeing everyone there so sell lots of tickets, spread the word, and come prepared to sample, sip, and savor this swinging cool jazz event. See you there!
