President's Message 3210

Zonta International Board Meeting Highlights.

Committee Appointments 2008-2010

Much to our regret, Jutta Semler decided to resign as Chairman of the international Bylaws and Resolutions Committee. A member of the international bylaws and resolutions committee has a conflict of interest issue if serving also in such a position at district level. (IBL Article VII Section 9 and Article XIII, Section 10g). Jutta made her choice to stay in the district bylaws and resolutions committee. We are grateful to Jutta who has served with great knowledge and enthusiasm. The Board has decided to appoint Past International President Margit Webjörn as Chairman of the 2008-2010 international Bylaws and Resolutions Committee from now on. Minimum membership to organize a new club

The Board acknowledges that 20 members isa minimum, recognizing the differences throughout the world. Although deciding to stay with the minimum of 20 members for a new club, the Board still believes it is very desirable to be the ideal of 25. The Board encourages the SOM committee to continue to mentor a new club
at least two years after the charter.

Follow-up on questions of interest to all members

A member sent a question about the legal possibility to limit scholarships to women. The issue has been reviewed by legal counsel whether Zonta International may limit eligible applicants for scholarships to women. The answer was received as below.

“The IRS Manual does not prohibit awarding scholarships based on gender. Section 4.76.11.3 of the Internal Revenue Manual states the scholarship program must benefita charitable class composed of members of a group not too small or narrow. The program should benefit the charitable class in furtherance of the organization's charitable purposes. A scholarship limited to female applicants benefits a large class of persons and is in furtherance of Zonta International's charitable purpose.
Specific instructions for applying for tax exemption also state the scholarship must benefit a charitable class and cannot discriminate on the basis of race. The instructions do not prohibit limiting eligible applicants on the basis of gender. Therefore, Zonta International may limit eligible applicants for scholarships to women.

Project Five-O

As has been reported, Zonta International left the coalition Project Five-O in July 2008. Since
then also Soroptimists and The International Federation of University Women (IFUW) have
left. There are only two partners left,

Zonta International President's Message - December, 2009

December 4, 2009 – Right Livelihood Award to Dr. Catherine Hamlin, Fistula Pioneer

Congratulations to Dr Catherine Hamlin (Ethiopia), Zonta International Honorary Member, who is awarded the Right Livelihood Award 2009 “for her fifty years dedicated to treating obstetric fistula patients, thereby restoring the health, hope and dignity of thousands of Africa’s poorest women”. The prize money is EUR 50,000. On December 4th parliamentarians, ambassadors, members of the board and jury of the Right Livelihood Award Foundation and invited guests from civil society, business and media among others will gather at the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm to honour the 2009 Award Recipients. The Swedish Deputy Prime Minister Maud Olofsson will together with the Vice President of the European Commission Margot Wallström present the Awards to the Laureates. The Award is widely known as the Alternative Nobel Prize and is presented annually in Stockholm, Sweden, at a ceremony in the Swedish Parliament. The Award is usually shared by four recipients. Often an Honorary Award is given to a person or group whose work the Jury wishes to recognize but who is not primarily in need of monetary support. The others share the prize money of EUR 150,000. The prize money is for ongoing successful work, never for personal use. Dr Hamlin was presented the Zonta International Honorary insignia at a ceremony in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1997 by Past International President Margit Webjörn (then ZI Director) and President Beryl Sten (then D21 Governor) per request by then D24 Governor Jane Wilson O’Brien. At the Convention 2000 in Hawaii Dr Hamlin was a keynote speaker and received at that time a substantial financial contribution from Zonta for her fistula work.

Zonta International President's Message - August, 2009

Dear Governors, International Committee Chairmen,Foundation Ambassadors, Past International Presidents, all Zontians, Please find below some very helpful information in our continued efforts to fund our promises to women who do need our support NOW!

Co-branding Zonta International / UNICEF partnership

unicef2

UNICEF has produced an excellent DVD called Missing Mothers. As the message may very well not only be related to UNICEF has produced an excellent DVD called Missing Mothers. As the message may very well not only be related to women that will die during pregnancy or childbirth but also to our service project in Rwanda, where deaths of HIV positive mothers have created a wave of orphans.

We are grateful to UNICEF for allowing co-branding with Zonta of this production that will increase the understanding and importance of funding to the international service projects we have promised to support.

Although this DVD is produced by UNICEF and we do relate it to our Rwanda project, the message and statistics of Missing Mothers are as relevant for our service project in Liberia together with UNFPA. Prevention of obstetric fistula is not only repair and reduction through surgery, it is a matter of changing attitudes relating to the underlying reasons such as girl marriage (resulting in too young girls being pregnant) and the practice of FGM (female genital mutilation).

Safe Cities Project

picture

Earlier this summer we did share with you the DVD produced by UNIFEM on one of the previous Safe Cities project in Latin America. Please view this as this is one of the models that we are using in the Zonta project Safe Cities in Guatemala City and San Salvador.  This model can be usedin a version applicable to any city or village in the world, and can easily be a club project in your own home town.  There are dark parks that women will not enter without some fear everywhere.

How right in time we were when choosing the Zonta Safe Cities project as UNIFEM and UN-Habitat in June this year joined their efforts to make cities free from violence against women and girls
